Harbour and Coastal Engineering

Harbour and coastal engineering is a highly specialised area of civil and structural engineering. Demand for this type of engineering is high as there are few who operate in this arm of the industry.

Meeting the demand for specialist advice in harbour and coastal projects

The Smart Alliances coastal team, until recently led by industry renowned specialist, John Smart, has many years experience in harbour and coastal engineering. Smart Alliances is in the unique position of being able to offer expert advice for planning, design and construction of residential and commercial projects within a marine environment.

Harbour and coastal projects can include breakwater, wharf and associated infrastructure; aquaculture ventures and commercial fishery operations, jetties and moorings for coastal residential properties, marina development and coastal retaining walls.

Local and international experience across the harbour and coastal spectrum

The demand for professional advice and engineering design specific to harbour and coastal projects has led to Smart Alliances being involved in projects throughout New Zealand as well as off-shore. With the Marlborough Sounds on its doorstep, there is also plenty of local work requiring harbour and coastal engineering. Any development taking place in the Marlborough Sounds must take into account its environmental impact on both land and water, and Smart Alliances is in the unique position to offer a locally based engineering service.

Hilton Hotel Resort Maldive Islands

Timber luxury villas constructed over water in sheltered lagoons with walkways and other facilities were first designed for Rangali Island in 1995. Since then we have designed similar facilities for many island resorts, with work continuing to this day.

Marlborough Sounds Marinas

Having carried out initial site investigations, environmental effect assessments and concept planning for the original Waikawa Bay Marina, we are now planning a second extension for over 500 boats at this marina. At Havelock, the first marina extension and design of the commercial wharf has been undertaken, as well as site investigation and plans for the new Kaiuma marina.

Kooddoo Island Fishing Port

In association with OPT International of Dunedin a new fishing port was investigated, planned and its dredging and construction supervised over a 2 year project financed by the World Bank. Construction of other fishing ports was also supervised in Felivaru Island and a 13km road and coastal protection project designed at Gan Attol.
