Moving to Blenheim

Why move to Blenheim, New Zealand’s new sunshine capital?

That’s right. According to the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, Blenheim was rated New Zealand’s sunniest place for 2008.

The Marlborough Region is more famous for its thriving wine industry producing world-class Sauvignon Blanc, and the stunning natural beauty of the Marlborough Sounds. The main settlements are Blenheim, Picton, Havelock and Kaikoura, with established pastoral, viticultural and horticultural industries as well as steady growth in aquaculture, recreational, tourism and business enterprises.

Blenheim is the region’s capital, built upon the Wairau Plains and flanked by the arresting presence of the Wither Hills, which have been immortalised by artists since the early settlers. Current population: 40,000 and climbing, Blenheim is among the fastest growing places to live in New Zealand, and understandably so.

There is an abundance of cafes restaurants and wineries where you can enjoy the local produce at its best, and a farmers market open from Labour Weekend to Easter so that you can create your own tasty seasonal dishes. Explore the region by car, coach, cycle or water taxi. Take a scenic flight, try a wine tour or charter a boat. Or sample a little luxury at one of the region’s health and beauty spas.

The surrounding landscapes range from the arresting green-and-blue scenery of the Marlborough Sounds and far-reaching flat plains with their sliver-sparkling chains of rivers, to the soft folds of the surrounding hills clad in golden native grasses and the rugged bare beauty of the high country. The diversity of Marlborough is reflected in the wide range of outdoor leisure activities from native bushwalks, mountain biking and horse trekking to fishing, sailing and kayaking: there is something for everyone on land, river or sea.
