Richard Evans (BSc Eng, CPEng, MIPENZ) Structural Engineer
Turns difficult concepts into reality, and is rumoured to have conquered the elusive “sky hook”…
Richard Evans has been a practicing Structural Engineer for around sixteen years, with the last twelve years based in Blenheim. Richard started in Marlborough with Connel Wagner and built up a successful structural engineering division. In 1990 he joined Abacus Design, where he subsequently met Derek.
International perspective adds new dimension to engineering possibilities
Growing up in Malawi and working in Africa has given Richard a distinct advantage when it comes to thinking outside the normal parameters.
“I was taught how to do things the right way, but when it came to applying it, it wasn’t that straightforward,” remembers Richard. “When you don’t have the resources for the job, you have to find another way: steel beams suddenly become wood and you have to make it work somehow.”
Extending engineering scope beyond buildings and structures
Richard’s previous roles included geotechnical work – site investigations and effluent design – but now he can leave this to the geotechnical specialist recently appointed at Smart Alliances.
“We have a comprehensive problem solving team able to extend into areas beyond just buildings and structures,” says Richard. “Because we work together, there is no allocation of blame or breakdown in communication. We can put our professional egos aside here and focus on preventing problems before they occur. Together we are better able to anticipate any challenges and work with each other to overcome them.”
Building on problem solving reputation with Smart Alliances
Richard and Derek had previously established a reputation for being problem solvers, with Abacus Design. Bringing the complementary skills of Paul Williams and John Smart was the ideal way for Richard to free up his time to focus on his main strengths; finding the engineering solutions that not only work but are economical for the client.
Although Marlborough has few multi-storeyed structures, the engineering skills of Smart Alliances have made possible a wide range of projects. Among those most memorable to Richard are:
- Marlborough Bottling Company - This 1,500m2 industrial plant in Riverlands would be the largest structural design to date in Marlborough for Smart Alliances.
- Saint Clair Winery - One of several local wineries designed for NZ Wineries, which Smart Alliances designed and project managed through to completion.
- (Moorhouse) House, Sunshine Bay - This distinctive two level hillside home in Marlborough involved several key design challenges that were resolved economically.
