Feature Project
Art Galley - Rototawai
Construction is set to begin soon on a new small art gallery at Rototawai, located in the Wairarapa. This new structure will sit beside an historic homestead, which is the childhood home of our client.
Context played acritical role in the design process. Rather than attempting to compete architecturally with the 100-year-old Georgian-style homestead, the new building was envisioned as part of a ‘walled garden’—a classic feature of many large country estates.
The architecture of the new gallery is intentionally understated, with a traditional brick wall serving as the central architectural element. The building’s form draws inspiration from the traditional farm structures that make up the existing estate, blending seamlessly into the environment as shown in the render below.
Inside, the gallery features a modern, high-ceilinged space, with a continuous band of high-level glazing along the brick wall, allowing for carefully controlled natural light.
